Our Sugar House

Our History

The story of Foss Hill Maple Farm began nearly 30 years ago with a simple dream, a few tapped trees, and a hand-built sugar house tucked into the woods. What started as a small family sugaring operation quickly became a way of life—rooted in hard work, tradition, and a deep love for the land, embodying the principles of sustainable maple farming.

Over the years, we made steady improvements—growing our sugarbush, refining our process, and expanding our offerings, including our beloved Maine maple syrup. Each step forward was guided by the same values we started with: sustainability, craftsmanship, and family.

Then, in 2021, just as the sap began to run, our sugar house was lost to a devastating fire. The heart of our farm, built with our own hands, was gone in a matter of hours. It was a deeply painful moment—but what happened next reminded us why we do this work.

Our family and community rallied around us. Neighbors, friends, and supporters stepped in with kindness, encouragement, and help—allowing us to keep going, even in the most difficult season we had ever faced. That support didn’t just help us rebuild—it reaffirmed the sense of connection that’s always been at the core of our farm, dedicated to producing small-batch maple syrup.

Today, our new sugar house stands as a symbol of that resilience. Built from the land, powered by the sun, and fueled by love and determination, it carries our story forward—stronger than ever.

Rebuilding

At Foss Hill Maple Farm, resilience runs deep—and so does the support of our incredible community. After the devastating fire in early 2021, we didn’t just pause—we pushed forward. With the help of family, friends, and neighbors, we were able to rebuild in the middle of the season, installing a brand-new evaporator and getting back to boiling sap for our small-batch maple syrup in record time. The experience was a testament to the strength of our farm family and the deep-rooted connections we’ve built over the years. Later that same year, we began construction on a new sugar house, crafted with the same heart and care that started this journey decades ago. Designed to reflect both tradition and sustainability, our new space allows us to continue our sustainable maple farming practices with even greater efficiency, warmth, and purpose. The road to recovery wasn’t easy—but thanks to the generosity and spirit of those around us, we came back stronger. Every board in the new sugar house, every batch of Maine maple syrup we make, is a reminder of what’s possible when a community comes together.

Our New Sugar House

The summer of 2021 was a season of transformation at Foss Hill Maple Farm. Following the loss of our original sugar house, we poured our energy, time, and hearts into building something new—something that honored our roots while embracing the future of sustainable maple farming.

With help from our incredible family and friends, we rebuilt the sugar house by hand, right here on the land we love. Every board, beam, and detail was crafted with intention. The result is more than just a building—it’s a reflection of our resilience, our values, and the vision we’ve carried for years, especially in producing high-quality Maine maple syrup.

This rebuild gave us the opportunity to invest in off-grid systems and upgrades we had only dreamed of before—ranging from solar power and sustainable materials to improved infrastructure for our small-batch maple syrup production. It was a chance to bring together tradition and technology in a space that supports our long-term goals and deepens our connection to the land.

Thanks to countless hours of hard work and unwavering support, we were proud and ready to launch the 2022 maple season in our brand-new sugar house—a place built not only from timber, but from community, gratitude, and grit.
